Porter, 'Videoconference Workshop Overviews', NCSU Libraries Newsletter v19n04 (February 1992) _The NCSU Libraries Newsletter_ Volume 19 no. 4 February 1992 Porter, George "Videoconference Workshop Overviews" A revolution occurred during the fall semester in how library conferences are held in North Carolina. Rather than librarians from around the state spending hours traveling on the road to conferences, videoconferencing permitted librarians scattered at different sites in the state to be brought together in "virtual proximity." George Brett, the program manager for Networked Information, UNC General Administration, hosted "Libraries and Networked Information" on August 19, 1991, the first of a series of videoconferences designed to bring librarians and computing center personnel in North Carolina together to discuss technology changes and the future of electronic libraries. Three new installments of "Libraries and Networked Information" appeared during the remainder of 1991. Those who were unable to attend the conferences can view videotapes of the proceedings acquired by the NCSU Libraries and available through the Media Center. Additional videoconference topics were "Wide Area Information Servers: A Supercomputer on Every Desk"; "Workstations in the Digital Library: An Introduction for Librarians"; "Wide Area Information Servers", parts 1 and 2; "Libraries and Information Services", parts 1 and 2. Future videoconferences will also be recorded and made available at the Media Center. The live videoconferences are open to all, and the next session will be Monday, February 24, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., in the studios located in the University's Park Shops. John E. Ulmschneider, assistant director for Library Systems, will review the provision of access to databases and will discuss electronic delivery of documents over the statewide network infrastructure.
