Gilreath, '1992 College Bowl Spring Challenge', NCSU Libraries Newsletter v19n04 (February 1992) _The NCSU Libraries Newsletter_ Volume 19 no. 4 February 1992 Gilreath, Charles L. "1992 College Bowl Spring Challenge" "Oh wow! This is really nice," the young man remarked to his companion as they walked into the room for another round of competition in the College Bowl Spring Challenge. Thus, with typical undergraduate talent for understatement, they passed judgment on the work of the 1992 College Bowl Committee. The members of the committee, headed by Claire Braxton of the library's Collection Management Department, handled the logistics of the day-long event, held February 8 on the second floor of the Erdahl-Cloyd Wing. Armed with a vast quantity of comestibles donated by staff members from throughout the Libraries, the committee supplemented the competition's food for thought with a lavish spread of the tangible sort, which the students greatly appreciated. During the competition, eighteen student teams challenged each other in answering questions covering everything from music history to spelling, from the laws of science to current events. Try your hand, for example, at identifying the twentieth-century composer credited with development of the twelve-tone system of music, or try putting all of Woody Allen's movies in correct chronological order. Although the Libraries did not field its own team for the competition, the team "Virtual Reality" drafted Library Technical Assistant Floyd Harris to play in the morning round, coming within five points of winning the single-elimination competition for established College Bowl teams. Chris Alexander won the morning round when his single-member team defeated all other opponents. In the afternoon, the competition consisted of a double-elimination round of intramural teams. That competition was won by a team with the appropriate names of the "Eliminators." By the time the contest ended at 5:30 p.m., both participants and committee members were exhausted, but everyone agreed that this had been a great way to spend a day at the library.
