"BIS Terminals on the Move"


This fall the Libraries relocated six BIS terminals from the 
Reference Department to other locations in the building to 
make it easier for users to check for items in the online 
catalog.  Two of the terminals have been moved into carrels in 
the Class of 1989 Reading Room, and four other terminals have 
been moved to the upper floors in the new addition.  The 
terminals in the new addition are located in the elevator lobby 
of even-numbered floors.  From observations made by the 
staff, it appears as though this redeployment has been a 
popular move with library users.

Public terminals will be placed at many other locations 
throughout the building once the next-generation online system 
is implemented.  The new system will be required to provide 
many more terminal ports, so it should then be possible to 
have terminals on all floors of the building.  For now, however, 
the existing system simply has run out of room to add more 
terminals.
