Davis, 'Czech Librarians Visit NCSU', NCSU Libraries Newsletter v19n01 (October 1991) _The NCSU Libraries Newsletter_ Volume 19 no. 1 October 1991 Davis, Jinnie Y.02 "Czech Librarians Visit NCSU" On October 10, 1991, the NCSU Libraries hosted a visit from Dr. Vojtech Balik (director of the National Library in Prague, Czechoslovakia), Dr. Adolf Knoll (deputy director), Dr. Vit Richter (director of the Circulation Department), Dr. Milos Novak (treasurer), Martin Svoboda (head of Computer Services), and Dr. Jiri Polisensky (director of the Reprographic Department). Accompanying them as interpreter was Zuzana Nagy (head, Czech Section, Widener Library, Harvard University). Funded by a Mellon Foundation grant, the Czech librarians were halfway through a whirlwind tour of various libraries and preservation centers along the East Coast, including the Library of Congress. At the NCSU Libraries, their primary interest focused on the library's application of new technologies to the provision of information to users (e.g., the Digitized Document Transmission Project and the Information Technologies Teaching Center). The good humor of the Czech librarians survived a day of intensive meetings, tours, mishaps with shuttle vans, and confrontation with Amtrak. The evening ended with the hope on both sides that the two libraries can engage someday in professional exchanges.
