Wolfpack Baseball Exhibit
By Anna Dahlstein, External Relations
To celebrate Coach Elliott Avent's tenth season, the NCSU Libraries
mounted Wolfpack Baseball: A History of Achievement, a
photograph exhibition drawing on the University Archives in the
Special Collections Research Center. Installed in the D. H. Hill
Library between March and August 2006, the exhibition drew appreciative
responses from the baseball team, fans, and former players. First
baseman Turtle Zahn, who set several school records in 1987, got
in touch from Virginia. R. G. (Hank) Utley, who played third base
from 1946 to 1950, was pleased to have the opportunity to share
this piece of NC State history with his daughter and granddaughter.
A member of the Society for American Baseball Research, Utley donated
his most recent book to the Libraries' collections, Outlaw
Ballplayers: Interviews and Profiles from the Independent Carolina
Baseball League (2006), which he co-authored with Tim and
Aaron Peeler. The exhibit represented a collaborative effort.
Former Director of Sports Information and Senior Associate Director
of Athletics Frank Weedon, Assistant Media Relations
Director Bruce
Winkworth, Wolfpack catcher Bob Kennell (1956-1958),
and legendary coach Charles "Chick" Doak's daughter-in-law Betty
S. Doak contributed their expertise and loaned a few photographs
not included in holdings from the University Archives. To enjoy
