New Library Personnel
Monica J. McCormick
The NCSU Libraries has announced the creation of a Digital Publishing
Center, which is part of the Learning and Research Center for the
Digital Age (LRCDA). The Libraries has appointed Monica
J. McCormick as its director of digital publishing, effective
July 1, 2006. McCormick will establish and develop a program to
facilitate the Libraries' collaboration with faculty members who
are engaged in creating and publishing digital scholarly content
and will play a leadership role in library and university digital
asset management. She will also lead digital publishing and institutional
repository initiatives and establish priorities for projects and
partnerships in light of university and library disciplinary strengths,
contributions, and trends.
Working closely with library colleagues, McCormick will provide
a key editorial and design role for online exhibition materials,
exhibit catalogs, and other unique library content and publications.
Her work will contribute to the definition of library standards
and practices for digitization and online presentation of text,
images, and multimedia.
With sixteen years experience at the University of California
Press, McCormick brings to the position a rich background in scholarly
publishing. She served for ten years as principal editor, contracting
for up to twenty-five books annually in history and ethnic studies.
She arranged for peer review of publications and served as a resource
for authors on copyright and fair use issues.
An interest in exploring
how digital information could enhance scholarly communication led
McCormick to a career transition into librarianship. Her studies
at UNC-Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science
have focused on digital libraries and digital preservation, copyright
law, and metadata. As a Carolina Academic Library Associate, she
completed an assignment as licensing intern in serials acquisitions
and continues to work as research assistant to the editorial board
of Documenting the American South, an outstanding digital publishing
initiative of Chapel Hill's University Libraries. She serves as
visiting program officer with the Association of Research Libraries
Task Force on Special Collections. McCormick will receive an M.S.L.S.
in May from the UNC-Chapel Hill. She is a cum laude graduate
of Carleton College, with a B.A. in history.
Joe Williams
Joe Williams became director of the NCSU Libraries
new Learning Commons on April 3, 2006, where users will find new
technologies combined with traditional knowledge resources in a
dynamic, community-oriented learning environment. Expected to open
in late 2006, the space for the Learning Commons is currently being
renovated with a focus on design, appearance, and flexibility for
future technologies. Williams will actively engage with NC State
students to identify emerging technologies of interest and will
work closely with the Libraries' Information Technology and Digital
Library Initiatives departments to implement a robust and relevant
computing environment.
Based in Research and Information Services, Williams will develop
a service plan and will advise on continued development of the
Learning Commons as a comfortable and welcoming environment for
collaborative student work.
Williams joins the NCSU Libraries from Texas A&M University,
where he has served since 2004 as manager for Education and Technology
Services in the Medical Sciences Library. There, he oversaw the
Medical Sciences Library's systems staff, budget, and operations
and developed and delivered an on-site and Web-assisted program
of library instruction. He led the Website Usability Committee
for the university-wide library system and chaired the College
of Veterinary Medicine's Instructional Technology Subcommittee.
As an adjunct professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics,
he taught courses in medical information management and health
informatics. Previously, he served for two years as education services
librarian for the Texas A&M Medical Sciences Library. He began
his professional library career with the NCSU Libraries, serving
as an NCSU Libraries Fellow from 2001 to 2002.
Williams holds an M.S.L.S. from UNC-Chapel Hill and a B.A. in
environmental studies from Warren Wilson College.
Darby C. Orcutt
Darby C. Orcutt was appointed senior collection
manager for humanities and social sciences effective March 1, 2006.
He leads the NCSU Libraries' collection programs in all humanities
and social sciences disciplines, with responsibility for planning,
policy development, and budget management. He maintains client-focused
relationships with faculty, researchers, and students to determine
collection needs and priorities, monitors trends in scholarly communication,
and analyzes use of the collection. He continues to hold oversight
responsibility for Collection Management's data analysis efforts,
providing information critical to decision making in a complex
environment of electronic publishing, elecronic-resource development,
and integrated library systems.
Since 2003 Orcutt has served the NCSU Libraries as collection
manager for humanities and data analysis. He joined the Libraries
in 2001 as an NCSU Libraries Fellow in the Collection Management
Department. Before entering librarianship, he worked for three

Education Division.
Orcutt has a strong record of publication, presentations, professional
development, and service on a range of library and campus-wide
committees, as well as regional and national library organizations.

Traditions of the World" as lecturer in the NCSU Department
of Philosophy and Religion.
Orcutt earned an M.S.L.S., an M.A. in communication studies, and
a B.A. with distinction in speech communication and religious studies
from UNC-Chapel Hill. As an undergraduate, he was a James M. Johnston
Scholar and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa; as a graduate student
in library science, he was awarded both a Margaret Ellen Kalp Fellowship
and a graduate assistantship.
John Vickery
John Vickery became collection manager for the
humanities and social sciences on February 1, 2006. He manages
humanities and social sciences collections through close, consultative
relationships with faculty, researchers, and students. He also
serves on the Humanities and Social Sciences Subject Team and is
involved in departmental efforts in collection analysis.
Vickery joined the NCSU Libraries in 2005 as an NCSU Libraries
Fellow, holding a home department assignment in Collection Management
while pursuing project assignments in Administration and Digital
Library Initiatives. As a graduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill,

Library Associate. During his fellowship, he held collection management
responsibilities for Latin American and Iberian resources, conducted
library Web site and database design and maintenance, and provided
reference service and bibliographic instruction. Last May he received
