Library Development: McTigue Incubator Endowment Grows
By Jim Mulvey, Library Development
After Bernie McTigue, the NCSU Libraries' head of Special Collections, unexpectedly
died last year, many of his friends and colleagues made contributions to the
NCSU Libraries in his name. With these contributions, the Libraries created
the Bernard F. McTigue Library Endowment for Special Collections. Income from
this Incubator Endowment account supports Special Collections, and materials
purchased with income from this endowment will be marked with a bookplate in
McTigue's memory. Incubator Endowment accounts are named funds that are building
to full library endowment status.
Under McTigue's leadership, which began in August 1999, Special Collections
experienced a period of unprecedented growth, and this endowment will be a
part of his legacy to NC State. Among his significant accomplishments at the
NCSU Libraries was the instrumental role he played in helping to establish
the animal rights archive in Special Collections and in helping to bring the
Pulitzer Prize photography exhibition to the Libraries in fall 2003.
The numerous gifts made in McTigue's name serve as a testament to the impact
he had on friends and colleagues across the country. These generous donations
will have a significant effect on the Libraries' ability to acquire important
materials for Special Collections.
The NCSU Libraries is privileged to have a part in honoring the memory of
Bernie McTigue. He is survived by his brother Philip, sister-in-law Colleen,
and niece Kerry McTigue. The family will receive an acknowledgment of all donations
made in his memory. Gifts may be sent to the NCSU Friends of the Library, Campus
Box 7111, Raleigh, N.C. 27695. For additional information about this or any
other endowments, please call Jim Mulvey at (919) 515-3339 or send an electronic-mail
message to jim_mulvey@ncsu.edu.
