New Library Personnel: December 2003 through January 2004

Veronica Walker

Veronica Walker became head of Monographs Cataloging at the NCSU Libraries on December 29, 2003. She joins an enterprising Cataloging Department that provides traditional cataloging and searchable metadata for rapid and precise access to the library's resources. She leads a unit that is responsible for books and other monographs in all formats and supervises cataloging of rare and special materials.

Previously, Walker served as the electronic resources cataloger at the University of Kentucky's W. T. Young Library. She moved through positions of increasing technological innovation and responsibility during her tenure there. Her first position was monographs cataloger, and she later worked as serials librarian. She also was co-cataloging manager of the University of Kentucky's SOLINET Microfilming Project and a participant in the Kinesiology Publications Cataloging Cooperative.

Walker is an active member of the Special Libraries Association (SLA). She received the SLA Diversity Leadership Award in 1999 and was selected as the Outstanding Chapter Member by the Kentucky Chapter in 2001. She is active in several professional organizations.

Walker received an M.S.L.I.S. from the University of Kentucky. She earned a B.S. in accounting, with a minor in management, from Clemson University.

Tito Sierra

Tito Sierra became the NCSU Libraries' digital technologies development librarian on January 5, 2004. He identifies and implements digital technologies to advance the collections and services of the Libraries and provides rapid prototyping support for projects such as the implementation of federated resource discovery solutions.

Sierra has demonstrated expertise in a Unix environment and extensive experience aSQL, MySQL and MS Access database management systems. His experience with XML standards and various scripting languages will augment projects of Digital Library Initiatives Department.

Sierra worked for five years at Amazon.com, most recently as its senior program manager, where he led the development of features, services, and software to expand Amazon.com's third-party electronic-commerce platform. He directed communications; assigned responsibilities for cross-functional business and technical teams; and oversaw business, technical, and operational requirements for several high-profile Web site releases. Before joining Amazon, he held positions with Planetall.com and with MIT Libraries.

Sierra earned a B.A. in government cum laude from Harvard University and an M.S. in information management from Syracuse University.
