Friends of the Library News -- Friends of the Library To Sponsor Seminars

On Saturday, February 1, 2003, the Friends of the Library will host two informative
seminars for Friends members and for the interested public. Beginning at 9:00
A.M., the first seminar will discuss preservation needs of personal collections.
This will be followed by a session on rare-book collecting. See the schedule
below for complete descriptions.
The seminars will be held in the Faculty Senate Chambers in the West (Erdahl-Cloyd)
Wing of the D. H. Hill Library and are free and open to the public. Seating
is limited, and advance registration is required. Participants can register
for the seminars by calling the Friends of the Library at (919) 515-2841. Please
call no later than January 29, 2003, to reserve a space.
SEMINARS
9:00 to 10:30 A.M.
Preservation Solutions for Private Collections
Scott Devine, head of the NCSU Libraries Preservation Department, will discuss
preservation issues for small personal collections. Participants will learn
what can be done on a limited budget to preserve collections of personal papers,
books, and family photographs. Key issues will include:
- environmental concerns, such as light damage, temperature, relative humidity,
and pest management
- proper storage and handling
- matting and framing
- basic repair techniques for papers and photographs
- working with a private conservator
The library will provide free catalogs and other samples. Participants are
welcome to bring items from their personal collections for advice on preservation
options.
11:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M.
A Gentle Madness: An Introduction to the Joys and Woes of Book Collecting
Anyone who is a collector of books or is interested in learning more about
book collecting should attend this seminar. Linda McCormick, assistant curator
for rare books and research services in Special Collections, invites novices
as well as established collectors to attend this introductory workshop on building
personal libraries and book collections. Topics will include:
- what makes a book rare
- book collecting online and off
- tips for assessing values of collections
- how to decipher a dealer's description of a book
- an overview of basic book terms
