Edward M. Griest, retired senior research associate with
Corning Glass Works, died on March 14, 2002. Griest received both his B.S.
and Ph.D. in chemistry from Penn State University. He joined Corning in 1950
and enjoyed a long career as a physical chemist, earning twelve patents. He
retired in 1984. Griest was active with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers, the American Chemical Society, the American Ceramic Society, and
the NCSU Friends of the Library.
Paul H. Harvey, NC State emeritus professor and lifetime
member of the Friends of the Library, passed away on April 12, 2002. Harvey,
a professor with NC State's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for fifty
years, was a plant geneticist. During his tenure, he was appointed to a William
Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professorship. He also helped to establish the
Farmhouse Fraternity and Gamma Sigma Delta. Harvey became a member of the West
Raleigh Presbyterian Church, Kiwanis, Men's Garden Club of Raleigh, and the
Friends of the Library. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ethel and
by two daughters, Barbara and Lois. He is survived by his wife Ola, daughter
Ann Harvey Scott, son David Paul Harvey, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Endowment at the Friends of the Library, NC State, Campus Box 7111, Raleigh,

Ezra L. "Zeke" Howell, NC State professor emeritus
from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, passed away on March 20,
2002. Howell was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army
from 1941 until 1946. In 1947 he joined the faculty at NC State, where he stayed
until his retirement as a full professor in 1982. Howell was an active member
of the West Raleigh Presbyterian Church, the Wolfpack Club, and the NCSU Friends
of the Library. He also worked with North Carolina's State Fair. His son, Donald,
predeceased Howell. He is survived by his wife Dorothy and a sister and brother.
