Friends of the Library News: In Memoriam, Life Members of the Friends of the Library

Micou F. Browne

Longtime library supporter Micou F. Browne died on July 15, 2001. Browne graduated from NC State in 1936 and began a career in life insurance, working at Occidental Life Insurance Company of North Carolina from 1936 until 1968. He then joined Durham Life Insurance Company as executive vice president and retired from there in 1981. Browne was very active in the Raleigh community throughout his life. He was a member of Raleigh's Jaycees and Kiwanis clubs and its Chamber of Commerce. He also joined the NCSU Alumni Association and Wolfpack Club. He served on the first Friends of the Library Board of Directors at NC State in 1963 and established the Micou and Katherine Browne Endowment for the library. Browne also served as a trustee for Peace College and the College Foundation, Inc. He is survived by his daughter Martha Luella Browne and by his son and daughter-in-law Micou M. and Mary Anne Browne.

A. Crane Jones

A. Crane Jones, a member of the Friends of the Library Board of Directors, passed away on April 23, 2001. Jones served in the United States Army during World War II and graduated from NC State University in 1951 with a B.S. in civil engineering. After a distinguished railroad career spanning forty-five years, he retired in 1989 as senior vice president of the CSX Corporation. Following retirement, he dedicated himself to organizations serving Jacksonville, Florida, and actively supported many NC State endeavors. Crane remained a dedicated alumnus, serving as an Alumni Association board member and as president and director of the NCSU Foundation. At the time of his death, he was co-chairing the NCSU Alumni House Capital Campaign. Jones is survived by his wife Jane, their children, and grandchildren.
