Herring Papers Received
By Bernie McTigue, Special Collections
The papers of William Dallas Herring have been added to the manuscript collections
of the NCSU Libraries' Special Collections Department. Herring, born in 1916
in Rose Hill, North Carolina, served as a member of the state Board of Education
for twenty-two years and as its chairman for twenty of those years (1957-1977).
He was responsible for educational initiatives that still shape the lives of
North Carolina citizens. Among these were the establishment of the community
college system, the initiation of a statewide curriculum study, and the development
of kindergarten programs. The Herring papers, consisting of 680 boxes of materials
occupying 113 linear feet of shelving, will enable researchers to explore multiple
aspects of the states development in the second half of the twentieth
century.
