The NCSU Libraries is pleased to announce the appointment of Eleanor
M. Smith as reference librarian for physical and mathematical sciences,
effective January 2, 2001. Smith joins the Research and Information Services
Department, where she will provide general research services at the reference
desk, via electronic mail, and in consultation with individual library users.
She will also design and conduct classes and seminars and develop instructional
materials and guides in print and electronic format. Smith works closely
with the faculty, staff, and students of the College of Physical and Mathematical
Sciences and plans responsive and innovative client-based information services.
Smith graduated in December 2000 with an M.L.S. degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Additionally, she holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in nutritional biochemistry
from Cornell University. Smith received a B.S. degree in nutrition and dietetics
from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
While working on her degree in Chapel Hill, Smith was an intern at the National
Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences in the Research Triangle Park and
served as a faculty assistant at the School of Library and Information Science.
Smith was a research support specialist in environmental and resource economics
at Cornell University.
Smith received the Margaret Ellen Kalp Fellowship while attending UNC-Chapel
Hill and the North Carolina Special Libraries Association's 2000 Sara Aull
Student Paper Award. She is active in professional organizations.
James B. Harper joined the NCSU Libraries as librarian for
interlibrary and document delivery services on January 16, 2001. Harper oversees
operations of the Interlibrary and Document Delivery Services unit of the Access
and Delivery Services Department. He works to provide innovative customer-focused,
cost-effective delivery services and participates in policy development related
to resource sharing. Harper will evaluate and revise delivery services work
flow and search methodologies and will implement new technologies. He also
serves as a liaison to the Triangle Research Libraries Network for delivery
services issues.
Harper served as document delivery and reference librarian at Furman University
for the past two years, where he planned, implemented, and supervised services
provided by the ILL/Document Delivery Department. Harper had previous appointments
at the NCSU Libraries and the Greensboro Allied Health Education Center Library
at the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
Harper received an M.L.I.S. degree from UNC-Greensboro and holds a B.A. degree
in English from that institution. He is an active member of professional organizations
and has served on a variety of committees, including the TRLN Document Delivery
Committee.
