Friends of the Library News: University Authors Days

North Carolina State University's Poet-in-Residence and Professor of English
John Balaban graciously signed copies of his critically acclaimed book Spring
Essence: Poetry of Ho Xuan Houng for admiring fans at the Friends of the
Library's second annual University Authors Days. University Authors Days was
held on January 30 and 31, 2001, in the D. H. Hill Library. Over the two days,
more than 350 guests attended the readings and lectures, which provided a fascinating
glimpse into the wealth of research and publishing activities pursued by university
authors.
Balaban was one of twelve NC State authors who participated in this popular
program, which celebrates the works of the university's talented authors. Other
participants were: Robert Entman (Communication), The Black Image in the
White Mind; Linda McMurry (History), To Keep the Waters Troubled:
The Life of Ida. B. Wells; Gail O'Brien (History), The Color of Law:
Race, Violence, and Justice in the Post-World War II South; Raymond Murray
(Nuclear Engineering), Nuclear Energy: An Introduction to the Concepts,
Systems, and Applications of Nuclear Processes; William Dunstan (History), The
Ancient Near East and Ancient Greece; William Harris (History), With
Charity for All: Lincoln and the Restoration of the Union; James Troyer
(Botany), Nature's Champion: B. W. Wells, Tar Heel Ecologist; Marvin
Soroos (Political Science and Public Administration), The Endangered Atmosphere:
Preserving a Global Commons; and Robert Metzger (Philosophy), A Master
of the Century Past. This year, a student joined the faculty making presentations:
C. Franklin Goldsmith (Mechanical Engineering), The Best Hikes of Pisgah
National Forest.
