Friends of the Library News: In Memoriam--Life Members of the Friends of
the Library

Carey H. Bostian, former NC State chancellor from 1953 to
1959, died on April 22, 2000. Before becoming the university's seventh chancellor,
Bostian was a zoology and genetics professor and associate dean of the School
of Agriculture. A dozen new buildings were constructed during his tenure as
chancellor, including the D. H. Hill Library. Chancellor Bostian worked at
NC State for forty-three years. His wife, Neita, and a son, Richard, preceded
him in death. He is survived by two sons, Lloyd and Karl (both NC State graduates),
as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
Memorial donations can be made to the Carey and Neita Bostian Library Endowment.
R. O. Everett (NC State Class of 1947), retired executive
vice president with Wachovia, died on June 24, 2000, in Salisbury, N.C. Everett
served during World War II and was a prisoner of war. He later joined Wachovia
Bank and remained there until he retired in 1986. He is survived by his wife,
Edith, and two children, Simon Justus and Susan (both NC State graduates).
Everett and his wife made provision to establish the Susan Ellen Everett Library
Internship Endowment through a planned gift.
Don W. Hayne, professor emeritus of statistics, died on May
18, 2000, in Chapel Hill, N.C. Hayne was considered a pioneer in devising quantitative
measurements for ecology. He came to NC State in 1961 to direct the Southeastern
Fish and Game Statistics Project and retired in 1981. His wife, Harriet Rheingold
Hayne, preceded him in death.
Harriet Rheingold Hayne, a preeminent developmental psychologist,
died on April 29, 2000, in Chapel Hill, N.C. Rheingold Hayne was a professor
emeritus at UNC-Chapel Hill, serving on the faculty of the Department of Psychology
from 1964 to 1986. She was married to Don W. Hayne.
Z. Zimmerman (ZZ) Hugus, Jr., professor emeritus of chemistry,
died on May 9, 2000, in Raleigh, N.C. Hugus was a professor of chemistry from
1967 until his retirement in 1992. His specialty was inorganic chemistry. His
wife, Nancy, predeceased him.
George W. Poland, head of the Department of Modern Languages
at NC State from 1956 until 1971, died on April 28, 2000, in Raleigh, N.C.
Poland came to NC State in 1948 as an instructor and retired as a full professor
in 1976. Memorial donations may be made to the library's Richard G. Walser
Endowment.
Mary Frances Munch Rood, of Cary, N.C., died on October 13,
1998. Rood earned a B.A. and M.D. from UNC-Chapel Hill. She was a psychiatrist
at Dorthea Dix Hospital in Raleigh until 1986. She was preceded in death by
her husband, H. Waldo Rood, and is survived by daughters Margaret and Elizabeth
and stepchildren Robert, Mary Ann, and Richard. The Hood Waldo and Mary Munch
Rood Library Endowment was established through a bequest to benefit the NCSU
Libraries.
Jean C. Speck, of Cary, N.C., died on July 13, 2000. Speck
was married to Marvin L. Speck, NC State William Neal Reynolds professor emeritus
of food science, for almost sixty years. Speck, a full-time homemaker, artist,
and author, wrote a biography of state Senator Ralph Scott entitled The
Gentleman from Haw River. Speck is survived by her husband, Marvin, and
three daughters, Linda Jean Speck, Martha Speck Huggins, and Susan Speck Sexton.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Marvin and Jean Speck Library Endowment
or to the music fund of White Memorial Presbyterian Church.
