Planning a Visit
Do You Really Need to Come Here?
While some research can only be done on campus, a great deal is accessible on the Internet from anywhere. See our guides to research online vs. on campus for patents and trademarks. Also, read our Before You Visit Us guide.
How Much Time?
Be aware that patent and trademark research takes a great deal of time. The average patentability search takes 25-30 hours! If you must use resources only available here, be prepared to commit several hours and/or make multiple visits.
Where Are We?
The Patent and Trademark Depository Librarian and most depository materials are located in the D. H. Hill Library on North Campus. On the North Campus Map, D. H. Hill is building number 47. You must enter from the Brickyard side; the entrances facing Hillsborough Street are locked.

Hours of Operation
The hours D. H. Hill Library is open are quite extensive during regular academic semesters. Check here for building hours on a particular day.
Although the library frequently maintains a 24-hour schedule, be aware that the general public is NOT admitted between 10 pm and 7 am. During these hours, individuals must present a university ID to gain entrance.
Parking
NCSU serves a student body of more than 31,000 and has nearly 8,000 faculty and staff. Since many students and most faculty and staff live off campus and drive in, as well as because of construction projects, parking is always tight. If you need to stay for more than a couple of hours at a time, consider using one of the free Park and Ride lots and riding the campus bus to the library. Not only is it free, it drops you almost directly in front of the library, saving you the walk from the parking deck.
See a map of visitor parking options.
See the most up-to-date information on parking rates, construction areas (see links on the right) and more at University Transportation's Visitor page. Note the links in the left sidebar
- Visitor Parking
- Enforcement/Appeals (tells when parking regulations are and are not in force)
- the Park & Ride and Meter & Pay Lots, and
- Transit for Visitors, i.e., the bus line.
Note that buying a visitor permit from one of the Visitor Information Centers or the Transportation Office is much less expensive than the meters or pay lots.
The Transportation Office is in the Administrative Services II building,
number 121 on the Central Campus map.
Free street parking is available on Hillsborough Street in front of the library on weekends and holidays only but fills up fast--this option is best if you'll be arriving early (prior to 8:30 am or so), that is, before the library opens.
Transportation staff are happy to answer questions about parking and buses. Contact them at 919-515-3424. The FAQ tab at the top right of their web pages may also be helpful.
