Introduction to Patent Searching

The purpose of this class to provide the fundamentals of offering patent reference assistance. The objectives are to be able to do the following:

  • Know the basics of intellectual property and the differences between copyrights, patents and trademarks
  • Know the different types of patents that can be issued
  • Understand the basic responsibilities of a Patent and Trademark Depository Library (PTDLP)
  • Be familiar with the most commonly used tools for patent searching
  • Be able to perform a basic known patent search
  • Be able to take a patron through a step-by-step patentability search using the USPTO web site.
  • Know when referral is necessary
  • Be aware of best practices for assisting patent patrons and know services we can and cannot provide.
