Introduction to Patent Searching
The
purpose of this class to provide the fundamentals of offering
patent reference assistance. The objectives are to be able
to do the following:
- Know
the basics of intellectual property and the differences
between copyrights, patents and trademarks
- Know
the different types of patents that can be issued
- Understand
the basic responsibilities of a Patent and Trademark Depository
Library (PTDLP)
- Be
familiar with the most commonly used tools for patent
searching
- Be
able to perform a basic known patent search
- Be
able to take a patron through a step-by-step patentability
search using the USPTO web site.
- Know
when referral is necessary

aware of best practices for assisting patent patrons
and know services we can and cannot provide.
