Patent Searching Exercises

Exercise One- Basic Patent Number Search

Patron says that after asking a girl in a bar "What's your sign?", she answered, "I am a patent attorney and would like to see you use US Patent 6,293,874". He wants to know whether this was an insult or a compliment. Can you help him?

Exercise Two- Quick Search
Note- the following should all be done using the Quick Search Mode in the Patents databases.

A) Find all the patents assigned to the Patents Applications database with U.S. Classification Number 482/1.

B) Find all the patents assigned to the Patents Database with U.S. Classification Number 482/1.

C) Find all the patents assigned to IBM from 1991-1995 with printing, print, prints, etc. in the title.

Exercise Three- Using Advanced Search Mode.

Note- the following should all be done using the Advanced Search Mode in the Patents database.

A) Find all the patents assigned to the Singer Corporation with the word sew or sewing in the title.

B) Find all the patents assigned to U.S. Classification 426/582. Pull up the first two and look at the full image. What does this classification code seem to represent? Now go to http://www.uspto.gov/ and work your way into the Manual of Classification. Search for the class definition for category 426/582. What is this class called?

Final Exercise- Patentability Search

A patron wanders in breathless with excitement. "I have a revolutionary invention! These sunglasses have taxidermy stuffed voles attached to each side for decoration! I want to get this patented! Can you tell me if this is possible?"

Note- although I do not expect you to be able to answer that question (none of us should!), I am asking in this exercise to go about finding one potential classification code where this invention might be found….
