Preservation
Our mission is to maintain and preserve collections and
the information they contain in viable and accessible formats. The
Preservation Department is comprised of two units performing diverse
functions in order to maintain the quality and accessibility of the
collection.
Shelf Preparation Unit
The Shelf Preparation Unit is responsible for preparing
newly acquired items for patrons' use. This includes marking the
material, applying date due slips, and adding call number labels. Most
importantly, though, the Shelf Preparation Unit evaluates each new item
to determine its stability, deciding when to repair, rehouse, or send
material to be rebound.
Conservation Unit
The primary concern of the Conservation Unit is to evaluate and
treat materials that have been damaged during circulation. While the
bulk of the materials reviewed are sent to the commercial bindery, the
Conservation Lab performs paper mending, rehousing, and recasing on
items that are more fragile or valuable to the collection. Conservation
staff are also responsible for review of brittle materials in order to
determine the value of reformatting.
Digitization
Preservation staff are increasingly involved in the
preparation and processing of materials to be digitized. Our
longstanding program for treatment and reformatting of damaged brittle
materials is now receiving digital surrogates for those items that
are in the public domain. In addition, due to the
stabilization required for many materials being scanned, the
Preservation Department coordinates projects with outside vendors and
performs quality control on the digital images upon return.
