What is RSS and how can it help you?
First and foremost, RSS will SAVE YOU TIME!
Do you repeatedly check various websites for new journal content, new articles in databases, news, sports scores, and so on and so forth? Do you also waste time sorting through email alerts, which clog up your inbox?
RSS feeds can rescue you from these tasks. The information you currently spend time gathering yourself, on various websites, can be automatically collected for you and provided through one single website.
Want more information? This video provides an explanation of RSS in plain English.
Want to schedule a one-on-one consultation or group workshop to learn more about this time saving tool? Please call (513-6218) or stop by the Veterinary Medicine Library or email Emily Mazure (NCSU Libraries Fellow) at Emily_Mazure@ncsu.edu.
New Book Alerts in Catalog
Would you like to be informed when the library gets new books in your area of interest? The Library catalog now provides RSS feeds of new titles that match your search criteria.
To use this new feature simply perform a search in the online catalog. Then click the RSS feed button in the upper right corner to subscribe to the feed. Your feed reader will list new books that match your search criteria as they are added to the catalog.
Read more about this feature or contact your Librarian at the Veterinary Medicine Library to get started.
Tuesday Aug 28, 2007
Search Alerts in EBSCO Databases
You can set up alerts to receive notification when new records are added to EBSCO databases such as CAB Abstracts and Agricola. On the search results page, look for the orange RSS symbol and click on the link labeled "Create an alert for this search." You will be given the option of signing in to receive an email alert, or copying the RSS feed link into a feed reader.
If you would like to learn more about staying current using RSS feeds, please contact us. We'll be glad to show you how to use feed readers to receive search alerts, journal tables of contents, and other information.

We have restructured the links in the left toolbar of our homepage to better serve the needs of our users. Notice the addition of direct links to several highly utilized databases, under the Article Databases section.
In addition, the Library Services and Library Resources sections contain new links to a variety of useful services and information resources offered through the Libraries.
These new links eliminate the need to travel from the Veterinary Medicine Library website to the main NCSU Libraries website to gain access to these resources. We hope these updates will enhance the efficiency of the Veterinary Medicine Library website for our users.
We would like to encourage our users to comment on these changes or any other relevant ideas or issues they may have.
Are these links helpful?
Are there other links you think would be useful to include on the VML homepage?

New Head of Metadata and Cataloging
The NCSU Libraries has appointed Erin S. Stalberg as Head of Metadata and Cataloging, effective September 24, 2007.
The Metadata and Cataloging department combines traditional cataloging services with new methods of analysis and description to facilitate discovery and retrieval from a vast array of resources available from the NCSU Libraries. As Head of Metadata and Cataloging, Stalberg will provide leadership during a critical and exciting period of change for technical services, brought about by emerging technologies and the changing composition of research library collections. In this role she will direct the enhancement of metadata infrastructures and practices within the department, while collaborating with colleagues across the Libraries to support growing metadata and digital collections initiatives.
Stalberg currently serves as Head of Cataloging Services for the University of Virginia Library, where she manages a staff of twenty to provide cataloging, metadata, and related technical services for the library system. Among her responsibilities, she chairs the Library's Metadata Steering Group, leading the development of metadata standards, best practices, and user interface recommendations for the University of Virginia's ongoing digital library implementation. Stalberg recently returned from an assignment as the on-board librarian for the University of Virginia's Semester at Sea program, where she provided library services to students and faculty on a voyage around the world. She previously served as Associate Head of Cataloging Services, University of Virginia Library, and as Cataloging/Technical Systems Librarian for the Francis A. Drexel Library, Saint Joseph's University.
Highly involved in professional activities, Stalberg serves as a reviewer for Resource Description & Access, as a trainer for Metadata Applications & Standards, Library of Congress/Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) Cataloging for the 21st Century, and as Webmaster for the Women's Studies Section, Association of College and Research Libraries. Recent presentations include From "Project" to "Workflow": Mainstreaming Non-MARC Metadata Creation into the Cataloging Department, ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group, June 2007 and Using a Wiki for Staff Communication (with C. Ruotolo), Virginia Library Association, November 2006. Stalberg holds the Master of Science in Library and Information Science from Drexel University and the Bachelor of Arts cum laude and with High Honors from Mount Holyoke College.

MobiLIB: Taking the Library with You
Recognizing the growing importance of mobile devices for communication, education, and entertainment, the NCSU Libraries has developed ?MobiLIB,? a suite of library services specifically designed for Web-enabled, small-screen mobile devices such as cell phones and PDAs.
MobiLIB currently consists of seven services. ?Catalog Search? offers a simplified search interface for the library catalog that allows users to limit their searches to available items. ?Computers? shows the location and count of available computers in the D. H. Hill Library, while ?Library Hours? lists operating hours for all NCSU libraries and core services. Users can search the ?Campus Directory? to find contact information for NCSU staff and students, and ?Contact Us? allows them to access various library departments and services. ?Links? contains a selection of links to external content providers, such as mobile search engines, and ?Wolfline Status? links to a text-only version of the Wolfline map that shows the current position of all Wolfline buses. New services are planned for the future.
To take advantage of MobiLIB, point your mobile device's web browser to this address: http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/m/.
For more detailed information about the new service, visit About MobiLIB.
Markus Wust and Tito Sierra in the Digital Library Initiatives Department are leading the development of this new service. Questions or suggestions about this service should be sent to markus_wust@ncsu.edu.

Cataloger Daniels Recognized for Excellence
Patrice Daniels of the NCSU Libraries' Metadata and Cataloging Department was recently honored at the University Awards for Excellence Luncheon as one of only four nominees from the Provost's Unit. This award recognizes excellence in the areas of outstanding state government service, innovations, public service, safety and heroism, and human relations.
Daniels was recognized for her outstanding work as a cataloger and as the training coordinator for her department. Her colleague, Anne Navarro, described the significance of her work in the nomination letter: "[A]lthough Patrice is very much a 'behind the scenes' worker, everyone who has used the NCSU Libraries catalog over the last 26.5 years has benefited from her knowledge, patience, and ability to train."

Finalist for Tech Award
For the second year in a row, the NCSU Libraries has been named as a finalist for the Building Better Communities Award given by SirsiDynix, a major library technology vendor. The awards committee narrowed a list of more than 100 nominated libraries down to 15 finalists seeking recognition for creative and enterprising uses of new technology to improve their user communities. The specific project for which the NCSU Libraries has been nominated is the 2006 implementation of a revolutionary search interface for the library?s online catalog, which has made finding high-quality information much easier and more efficient.
The committee, consisting of independent library leaders from around the world, will select six libraries to receive US$10,000 each for their creativity and accomplishments. Through the Building Better Communities Awards, SirsiDynix seeks to recognize library organizations that create better places to live, work and learn, while encouraging libraries everywhere to follow their examples. Award recipients will be announced on June 24 at the American Library Association's Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.

B. W. Wells: Pioneer Ecologist
Media contact: Anna Dahlstein, (919) 515-3585
The work of pioneer ecologist and NC State professor B. W. Wells is the focus of the first exhibition to be featured in the D. H. Hill Library?s new exhibition gallery. The story is told by the wealth of excellent photographs that Wells took to document his research. He converted four-by-five-inch negatives to glass lantern slides and hand-tinted many of them with watercolors. Throughout his career, he used these images to enlighten everyone he encountered on the importance of appreciating nature. The NCSU Libraries and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have partnered to preserve, identify, digitize, and display these images.
Much of Wells? work focused on the ecologically unique Big Savannah located in Pender County, North Carolina. Although this landscape was forever lost to the plow in the late 1950s, the recent discovery of a similar site, dedicated as the B. W. Wells Savannah in 2002, created a renewed interest in the ecology of this region and the abundance of plants and flowers that are found there today. Photographer Freda Wilkins of Wilmington, North Carolina, has documented them for this exhibition.
The exhibition also displays Wells? publications, including his popular work, The Natural Gardens of North Carolina, which has been an invaluable resource for North Carolinians interested in the native flora of the state for over 75 years. Other highlights include his camera, botanical specimens, and original documents produced by Wells.
All of the photographs in the B. W. Wells Collection are available in the online exhibit on the NCSU Libraries? Web site. The images are also featured in the catalog that accompanies the exhibition, available for purchase from the NC State Bookstores.
This library?s new exhibit gallery is part of the recent renovations of the D. H. Hill Library, which now offers a state-of-the-art Learning Commons and a Special Collections Reading Room.

PubMed Now Displays Links to NCSU Libraries Holdings
Now when you run a PubMed search, you'll see something familiar in each record: the button, available in most NCSU Libraries databases, that gives you access to the full text of online journal articles and other options.
There are a couple of things to remember:
1. To take advantage of this feature, you must access PubMed via the URL listed in the Libraries' Databases list and catalog, rather than going directly to the PubMed site (http://www.pubmed.gov). Why? If you go to straight to PubMed via a search engine or some other link, PubMed won't know you're from NC State and won't give you the same access. If you'd like to bookmark the NCSU Libraries' access point to PubMed, the URL is http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/cgi-bin/proxy.pl?server=www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?otool=ncsulib
2. The FindText button does not appear in the default Summary record display. To see it, either
a.) click on the link to view the full record, or b.) change the display to either Citation or Abstract.

North Carolina State University is hosting a prestigious executive leadership program for academic and research libraries between April 21 and 26, 2007. Jointly designed and sponsored by Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member libraries, the Research Library Leadership Fellows (RLLF) Program aims to prepare the next generation of deans and directors of large research libraries.
Vice Provost and Director of Libraries Susan K. Nutter says, ?As an institution that works actively to recruit and develop the most scholarly, dedicated, and creative members of the library profession, NC State will benefit from working closely with a group of Research Library Leadership Fellows who are poised to shape libraries and librarianship at the national and international level.?
The 2007?2008 ARL RLLF Program is being designed and sponsored by six ARL member libraries: University of California, Berkeley and the California Digital Library; Harvard University; University of Minnesota; North Carolina State University; Pennsylvania State University; and the University of Toronto.
A selection committee composed of the ARL directors sponsoring the program chose 23 fellows from a highly competitive applicant pool. The 2007?08 fellows include two senior administrators from the NCSU Libraries: Kristin Antelman, the Associate Director for the Digital Library, and Wendy Scott, the Assistant Director for Organizational Design and Learning.
The pilot program in 2004-2006 -- which was sponsored by the University of California at Los Angeles; Columbia University; University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; University of Texas at Austin; and University of Washington -- included the NCSU Libraries? then-Head of Acquisitions and Director of Licensing, David Goldsmith, who has since been appointed to the senior position of Associate Director for Materials Management.
NC State?s institute of the 2007-2008 RLLF Program, the first of three, is organized around the theme ?Extreme Makeover: The Library Edition.? NCSU Announces Libraries Fellows
Media contact: Anna Dahlstein, tel. (919) 515-3585
The NCSU Libraries has announced the appointment of the NCSU Libraries Fellows, 2007-2009, effective July 2007: Kristen Blake, Hyun-Duck Chung, Sandra Littletree, Emily Mazure, and Joseph Ryan.
The NCSU Libraries Fellows Program develops future leaders for academic libraries, with a focus on science, engineering and digital librarianship, and on library management. Now in its ninth year, the program continues to attract a diverse and impressive group of talented new graduates from universities throughout North America. NCSU Libraries Fellows are appointed for a two-year term as members of the library faculty, combining a project assignment on an initiative of strategic importance with a half-time appointment in a home department.
Kristen Blake brings experience in science library public and technical services, as well as an interest in innovation and leadership to the Fellows program. Blake's home department will be Metadata and Cataloging. Her project will focus on the implementation of E-Matrix, an electronic resource management system developed by the NCSU Libraries.
This May, Blake will receive the Master of Science in Library and Information Science and the Certificate of Advanced Study in Digital Libraries from Syracuse University. She was awarded a graduate assistantship at the School of Information, where she plans promotional appearances and writes press releases for the school, and she has served as the interim communications manager for that program. Blake also served as a library intern at the Moon Library, State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry, where her duties included reference work and original cataloging of theses and dissertations. Before starting her graduate work, Blake was a freelance reporter. She holds the Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and English from Lehigh University.
Hyun-Duck Chung's experience with digital projects will serve her well in her project assignment in Digital Publishing. She will build on her reference and instructional experience in her home department, Research and Information Services.
Chung will receive the Master of Information Studies from the University of Toronto in June. As a graduate assistant at the Gerstein Science Information Centre, Chung provides reference and instructional services in the health sciences. Seminar to Explore Gaming and Digital Literacy
Media contact: Anna Dahlstein, (919) 515-3585 | Online gaming and learning expert Constance Steinkuehler will be the featured speaker at the NCSU Libraries' I. T. Littleton Seminar on Tuesday, May 1, 2007. It will be held at 2:00 P.M. in the second floor Assembly Room in the East Wing of the D. H. Hill Library. A reception will follow the seminar. Steinkuehler's talk, entitled "Digital Media Literacy and Learning in Virtual Worlds," will address the forms of literacy that constitute participation in massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), also known as virtual worlds. |
Currently an assistant professor in the curriculum and instruction department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Steinkuehler researches the intellectual practices that aid navigation, cognition and learning in virtual worlds. Such practices include informal scientific reasoning, collaborative problem solving, media and computational literacy, and the social learning mechanisms that support the development of such expertise, such as reciprocal apprenticeship and collective intelligence. Steinkuehler's doctoral dissertation was a two-year online cognitive ethnography of the game Lineage, focusing specifically on the forms of cognition, learning, and literacy recruited from those who game. She teaches "Research in Online Virtual Worlds," "Analyzing Online Social Interaction," "Gender and Technology," and "Critical Instructional Practices on the Internet" and runs the annual Games, Learning, and Society Conference in Madison, Wisconsin. This year's I. T. Littleton Seminar comes soon after the inauguration of the NCSU Libraries' Learning Commons, an innovative environment designed to support students' group work and social interaction through a variety of cutting-edge tools and services. Steinkuehler will provide an interesting perspective on how virtual and physical spaces build on each other, and ways in which many current students communicate, collaborate, and learn. The annual I. T. Littleton Seminars are funded by an endowment established in 1987 to honor former Library Director Littleton upon his retirement from NC State. The Libraries welcomes your continued support of the I. T. Littleton Seminar series. If you would like to make a voluntary contribution to support future seminars, please send your check, payable to the Friends of the Library, to: Friends of the Library, NCSU Libraries, Box 7111, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC 27695-7111. Please note "I. T. Littleton Seminar Endowment" on your check. For more information, please call (919) 515-2841. Directions to the D. H. Being Caribou: Lecture Today
North Carolina State University will host a lecture and book signing by wildlife biologist and author Karsten Heuer on his experiences among the Alaskan caribou, and what oil drilling may do to their habitat and the herd.
The lecture will be held on Friday, March 23 at 6 p.m. in the Witherspoon Campus Cinema on NC State?s campus. It is free and open to the public. Witherspoon Campus Cinema is located in the Witherspoon Student Center on Cates Ave.
In 2003 Heuer and his filmmaker wife, Leanne Allison, set off to discover the challenges facing Alaskan caribou in the face of the potential use of their calving grounds for oil fields. For five months they skied and walked alongside the 123,000-member Porcupine caribou herd from their Yukon winter range to Alaskan calving grounds and back. Using still images, film clips, and stories, Heuer will present what he and his wife learned amongst the herd, not only about the environment but also about himself.
Following the lecture, Heuer will be available to sign copies of his book, Being Caribou.
The lecture is sponsored by the College of Design, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and the NCSU Libraries.
