Abstract (Summary)

The world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., has put enormous effort in recent years into curbing excess packaging and offering environmentally friendly products. [...] by thinking about sustainability from our standpoint, it really is about how do you take cost out, which is waste, whether it's through recycling, through less energy use in the store, through the construction techniques we're using, through the supply chain.

In the mid-1990s, the Undergear label, which has a catalog and a Web site, sold two styles of shapers for men -- a stretchy, slimming tank top and a boxer brief that the brand touted as "problem solvers" designed to "redefine trouble spots."

Ray A. Smith. Wall Street Journal. (Eastern edition). New York, N.Y.: Mar 13, 2008. pg. D.1
Abstract (Summary)

Such findings, coupled with the relative strength of men's apparel in general -- sales rose 4.4% to $57.2 billion last year, compared with a 1.1% increase to $103.1 billion for women's apparel, according to market researcher NPD Group -- are prompting more online fashion retailers to take aim at men. With easier-to- navigate page views at the Tie Shop, "we wanted to give men features that allow them to see a lot of product in a short amount of time and to be able to find something online quickly, not have them clicking back and forth," says Gerald Barnes, senior vice president of Neiman Marcus Direct, which includes catalog and online divisions.
