Built Environment Collections

Since early 2009, the Special Collections Research Center has acquired the following new built environment collections that document the twentieth-century history of architecture and landscape architecture in North Carolina and elsewhere in the U.S.:

  • Lewis Clarke Collection , 1952-1993, 530+ linear feet.  Contains drawings, project files, project booklets, and other papers of  this prominent landscape architect and early College of Design faculty member.  Includes base maps, overlays, and final drawings for such projects as Rex Hospital in Raleigh and Tega Cay outside of Charlotte, NC, as well as master plans for UNC Charlotte, UNC Wilmington, and St. Andrews Presbyterian College. This collection is being processed as part of the Changing the Landscape project. Currently accessible are oral histories and other information about Lewis Clarke.
  • Charles Kahn Papers , 1950-1960, 2 linear feet.  Includes photographic negatives of the work of architects and College of Design faculty members Charles Kahn, Horacio Caminos, Buckminster Fuller, Matthew Nowicki, James Fitzgibbons, Eduardo Catalano, and George Matsumoto. Collection guide available.
  • Marvin J. Malecha Papers , 1972-2010, 15 linear feet.  Contains speeches, publication files, booklets, and project files from the current dean of NCSU's College of Design.
  • Preservation North Carolina Collection of Architectural Drawings and Videotapes, 1920-1997, 13.5 linear feet.  Includes blueprint drawings for the El Nido house in Shelby, NC, and videotapes of Bob Stipe's Planning for Historic Preservation Short Course, and the PNC productions At Work and At Play , Far Fetched and Dear Bought , On the Tracks of Progress , and A Passion for PlaceCollection guide available.
  • Office of the University Architect Records , 1938-2008, 85 linear feet.  Contains architectural drawings of university buildings.
  • Doris J. Stanley Architectural Drawings , 1961-1986, 1 linear foot.  Drawings of this architectural designer based in Durham, NC. Collection guide available.
  • Gil Wheless Papers , 1965-2005, 69 linear feet.  Includes drawings, photographs, and other papers of this prominent landscape architect, whose work in the northern U.S. includes Bridgewater Commons Mall, Dow Corning, Bronx VA Hospital, and Chesebrough Ponds, among others. Collection guide available.
