WolfWikis Launched for Easy Web Collaboration

WolfWikis

The NCSU Libraries has launched WolfWikis , a wiki hosting service designed to support the personal, curricular and scholarly communication activities of students, faculty and staff at NC State. Wikis can be described as websites that make it easy to create web pages and then edit them in a collaborative mode. ?Wiki wiki? means "rapidly" in the Hawaiian language.

WolfWikis allows anyone with a Unity ID to create wikis. Wikis are becoming increasingly popular tools for collaborative work such as preparing jointly edited documents, building knowledge bases, completing group projects, and more.

To ensure that WolfWikis would offer the features and flexibility demanded by a research university with thousands of potential users, NCSU librarians evaluated various free, open-source software options. They selected and adapted MediaWiki , the application that powers Wikipedia , the well-known, collaboratively built online encyclopedia.

Both WolfWikis and WolfBlogs complement the Libraries' Learning Commons initiative by offering the campus community an easily accessible online collaborative environment.

NC State faculty and instructors who would like to learn more about using wikis in their courses are encouraged to visit the Information for Faculty page , and/or to contact Kim Duckett , Principal Librarian for Digital Technologies and Learning, tel. (919) 513-3653, or the Learning Technology Service . For technical support, please contact the NC State Information Technology Division's Help Desk .

Use of WolfWikis is subject to applicable laws and NC State policies governing, for instance, computer use, copyright, privacy rights for education records, non-discrimination, and student conduct.
