Core Historical Literature of Agriculture: How did people raise pigs in the 19th century? What were people talking about in the journal of Agricultural History in 1965? These are but a few of the questions answered in the documents contained within The Core Historical Literature of Agriculture website. Created by staff members at the Albert R. Mann Library at Cornell University, the site contains important agricultural texts from the nineteenth century to the late twentieth century. Visitors can learn more about the collection in the "About" section, and then move along to the "Browse" area. Here visitors can browse all of the titles alphabetically or chronologically. Visitors can also find recent additions here. New visitors might want to peruse the 1827 volume "The Honey Bee: its natural history, physiology and management" or the 1921 work, "The Marketing of Whole Milk".
Gateway to Farm Animal Welfare: A new Internet portal has been launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) that will serve as a one-stop-shop for individuals and organizations searching for the latest information about the welfare of livestock. The Gateway to Farm Animal Welfare is designed to provide a reliable information conduit on legislation and research findings in the sector, as well as on animal welfare standards, practices and policies. Expected users are farmers and government officials, lawmakers, researchers, the livestock and food industry and non-governmental organizations. It also serves as a participatory platform to retrieve and submit information, as well as to engage in commonly developed projects and thematic discussions.
Global Livestock Production and Health Atlas (GLiPHA): GLiPHA is an interactive electronic atlas that provides a scaleable overview of spatial and temporal variation in quantitative information related to animal production and health. Against a back-drop of selected maps of livestock densities, land-use or elevation, sub-national statistics relating to the livestock sector can be mapped, or displayed as tables and charts. The objective of GLiPHA is to facilitate access to livestock sector information for analysis and informed decision making and to increase awareness of socio-economic, human and animal demographic and health related issues. GLiPHA draws on sub-national data managed within the Global Livestock Impact Mapping (GLIMS). The interface uses KIDS-3g technology, the third generation of the Key Indicator Data System.
Human Physiology Animations (Connecticut College): Learning about the basics of human physiology can be important for pre-med students and others with an interest in how the various systems of the human body function and interact. This fine resource from Connecticut College can be used in a variety of settings, and the illustrative animations here are divided into sections that include "Muscle", "Endocrine", "Circulatory", and "Digestive". Each section has useful animations, and a few also offer short tutorials, fun quizzes, and explanatory sections that talk about the key processes within each system. The entire site is easy to navigate, and even first-time visitors will find that locating crucial information here is fairly straightforward. Note: The animations found on this site require the Shockwave/Director plug in.
