Websites of Interest
Encyclopedia of Life: A webpage for every organism on earth is the goal of this site, which was initially funded in 2007 by the MacArthur Foundation and the Sloan Foundation. To "learn how to navigate EOL, search for content, customize your experience, and explore pages..." visitors can start with the tab "Using the Site" at the top of the page. Here, there is a video tour on general "Navigation" of the site and instructions on how specifically to use the "Species Pages". Users can check out the FAQs section under the same tab for more help. Visitors can select the "Language" tab at the top of the page to view the site in English, Spanish, Russian, Ukranian, German, or French. In the "About EOL" tab on the far upper right hand side of the page, visitors can check out the "Content Partners" link about halfway down the menu. There are over two dozen partners and links to their websites listed, including the Nearctic Spider Database, Mushroom Observer, FishBase, and AntWeb.
Forest Biodiversity: The Convention on Biological Diversity: Forestry Biodiversity is a program of The United Nations and United Nations Environment Programmes. Visitors who would like a comprehensive explanation of forest biodiversity should check out the heading on the left side of any page "About Forest Biodiversity", and its accompanying links "What is Forest Biological Diversity?", "What's the Problem?", "Why Does it Matter?", and "What Needs to be Done?" Keeping up on the news relating to REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation), put out in a bimonthly newsletter, is easy when users sign up for the e-newsletter. Under the "Implementation" section is the link to "Case Studies" which offers over 50 documents to download, from "Expansion of Industrial Logging in Central Africa" to "Assessing Human Well-Being in Sustainable Forest Management" to "Application of Ecosystem Approach in Finland - Landscape Ecological Forest Management Planning".
The Polio Crusade: This episode of PBS's American Experience series tackles the crusade against polio that came to a dramatic crossroads in 1950. The story not only illuminates the details of the disease, it also shows how donations from average Americans provided significant funding, and how Americans banded together to help fight the disease. Many scientists, polio survivors, doctors, and parents are interviewed for the film, and despite knowing the outcome--invention of the Salk vaccine and eventual eradication of polio in the United States--the film is still very compelling. The "Learn and Explore" section, also on the left side of any page contains fascinating features including "Story Highlights", "Teacher's Resources", and "Then & Now". For visitors without access to a TV, clicking on "Watch the Film Online", in the middle of the page, allows anyone to watch the complete film online.
USDA Census of Agriculture: The United States Department of Agriculture has the results of the 2007 Census of Agriculture now available on its website. Unlike the ten-year census of all people, the census of agriculture occurs every five years. By looking at the USDA website under the Census Highlights section in the middle of the homepage, visitors can get a taste of what data is collected. "Farm Numbers", "Women Farmers", "Demographics", "Watersheds" and a number of farmers of different ethnic groups, such as "Asian Farmers", "Black Farmers" "Hispanic Farmers" and "American Indian Farmers" are all presented. Also, a few special surveys, which are linked at the bottom of the page address organic farming production and the use of irrigation in farming and ranching. Visitors interested in historical agricultural census data can find it on the left side of the page. The "Historical Years" link has data in ten year increments from 1840-1950, the later dates providing a wider range of data. Also on the left side of the page is a drop down box that allows users to search for census information for a particular state.
