Maps and Atlases
World Maps
Many world maps can be found in the large flat map cases filed either
by sudoc call number or by LC call number. Use the library's online
catalog to obtain call numbers for maps. Atlases are also a good source of current
world maps. Some world maps, especially older ones, are not represented in the library's online catalog--shelving
arrangements are described below.
CIA Maps
These are usually simple color maps showing political and administrative
boundaries as well as major cities or towns. Most of these maps are 8
1/2 x 11 inches. They are filed in a special section of the maps collection
alphabetically by country name or region name.
National Geographic Maps
These are the fine quality detailed maps that come as inserts in the
National Geographic magazines. They are listed in the library's online
catalog and filed in the LC classified section of the maps collection.
The Library of Congress has digitized thousands of maps for viewing online. Browse or
search by geographical area, or look for thematic maps in areas such as discovery and exploration,
conservation and the environment, or cultural landscapes.
