After serving in World War I, Lee was a professor of military science in NC State's ROTC program. Called the "Father of the Airborne," he established the U.S. military's first platoon of paratroopers and commandeered the 101st Airborne Division. Lee planned the airborne operations during the Normandy Invasion in 1944, but could not participate himself as he fell ill prior to the invasion.
