McKimmon Center, built in 1976 and expanded in 1983, is named after Jane S. McKimmon, who became North Carolina's first home demonstration agent in 1911. She served in this position until 1937 and was also appointed to leadership positions by several governors. The foundation for the construction of the Center was laid by 40,000 members of the Extension Homemaker Club who donated $100,000 in 1966. Plans for the inclusion of hotel facilities were abandoned after protests from local hoteliers.
