The Paul Derr Track Facility, which is open to the public, was built in the 1960s and renovated in 1994 and 2008. It is named after Paul H. Derr, a native of Ohio who worked as athletics director in Wisconsin and Illinois before joining NC State in 1951. Here, he served as track and cross country coach as well as head of the Department of Physical Education until he retired in 1970. Derr Track served as training site for international athletes prior to the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.
