Doak Field, built in 1966, is named after Charles Glenn Doak. After playing in the minor leagues and coaching baseball at Guilford College, UNC Chapel Hill and Duke, he came to Raleigh to operate a grocery store and began coaching NC State's freshmen team. In 1924, he took over as coach when his predecessor resigned late in the season. Doak coached until 1939, but remained on the physical education faculty until 1955. His strategy was that "the best defense is a hell of an offense."
