Watauga Hall was built in 1893, destroyed by fire in 1901, rebuilt in 1903, and renovated in 1985. In 1964, it became NC State's first women's residence. It is named after the Watauga Club, a group of progressive young Raleigh men who pressed the state legislature to bring practical industrial and scientific education to the state. Their efforts led to the establishment of NC State in 1887. Many campus buildings are named after club members.
