In 1914, most of the building was destroyed in a fire. It was rebuilt the same year and renovated in 1924 and 1981. Daniel A. Tompkins served on NC State's Board of Trustees and was a strong advocate for the establishment of textile schools at Clemson University and NC State. He established hundreds of mills and was publisher of the Charlotte Observer.
