Originally known as South Hall, Syme Hall was built in 1916 in the style of the 1911 Building and renovated in 1991. It is named after George Frederick Syme, an NC State graduate and Raleigh city engineer. He and Carroll Lamb Mann (Mann Hall) took part in a U.S. government survey party that explored the possibility of building a canal across Nicaragua. Later, he returned to North Carolina as a highway and bridge specialist. He was also treasurer of the NC State Bell Tower Committee.
