Ricks Hall, built in 1922 and renovated in 1976, is named after Robert Henry Ricks, a long-time trustee of NC State. Ricks was a successful farmer, banker and businessman in Rocky Mount where he served as director and president of the Rocky Mount Cotton Mills. He was also interested in research and development of farm crops, such as bright-leaf tobacco. As member of the 1903 state legislature, he helped provide appropriations for much of the university's early development.
