Poe Hall, built in 1971, is named after Clarence Hamilton Poe. At the age of 18, the largely self-educated Poe became editor of The Progressive Farmer, which during his 65-year tenure became the preeminent farm publication in the South. Poe, a friend of six American presidents, was a national leader in agriculture and education and made important contributions to these fields in the South. He was also a strong advocate of improved services for rural populations.
