Patterson Hall was built in 1904-1905 and renovated in 1986. Originally called "Agriculture Hall," it was renamed in 1912 after Samuel Ledgerwood Patterson. Patterson was state commissioner of agriculture and served in both the North Carolina House of Representatives and the Senate. He was instrumental in passing important agriculture legislation, such as pure food and tick eradication laws. Patterson was against locating the building on campus and thought it should instead be moved downtown.
