He and George Syme (Syme Hall) took part in a U.S. government survey party that explored the possibility of building a canal across Nicaragua. For 30 years, he chaired the alumni memorial committee, which pushed for and oversaw the construction of Bell Tower; he considered this achievement to be his greatest experience.
