Mann Hall was constructed in 1964 and became the second building to be named after Carroll Lamb Mann, who headed the Department of Civil Engineering from 1916 to 1948. He and George Syme (Syme Hall) took part in a U.S. government survey party that explored the possibility of building a canal across Nicaragua. For 30 years, he chaired the alumni memorial committee, which pushed for and oversaw the construction of Bell Tower; he considered this achievement to be his greatest experience.
