In order to accommodate the influx of students who were supported through the G.I. Bill after World War II, temporary classroom buildings and Quonset huts (prefabricated structures made from corrugated galvanized steel with a semicircular cross section) were built on the Court of North Carolina (or Court of Carolinas). The Court once contained a tree or shrub from each of the 100 counties in North Carolina, but many plants were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Fran in 1996.
