Caldwell Hall, built in 1981, was known as the "Link Building" as it connected the older Tompkins Hall and Winston Hall. It is named after John Tyler Caldwell, who served as the eighth chancellor of NC State, from 1959 to 1975. During these years NC State was designated a university. Many programs in the humanities and social sciences were introduced, facilities were expanded considerably, and enrollment increased from 5,000 to over 15,000 students.
