The Yarbrough Drive Steam Plant was built in 1924, began operation in 1925, and was expanded in 2005. It is named after Louis Thomas Yarbrough, a member of the first class of 1893. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering, taught at NC State for two years, and later worked as postal inspector. In 1927, his daughter Mary became one of the first three women to receive a degree from NC State and the first woman to receive a graduate degree. Yarbrough Court is named in her honor.
