The Park Shops, designed by Raleigh architect Harry P. S. Keller (who also planned the 1911 Building and Leazar Hall), were built in 1914 and completely modernized from 2007 to 2009. They are named after Charles Benjamin Park who, from 1892 to 1934, was superintendent of shops. From 1890 to 1920, he held the position of superintendent of the Heat, Light, and Power Plant. He also served as director of banks and insurance companies and was the head of Raleigh's first City Planning Commission.
