Kilgore Hall was built in 1952 and renovated in 1973. It is named after Benjamin W. Kilgore, who served as dean of the School of Agriculture from 1923 until his resignation in 1925. Kilgore was North Carolina's state chemist and first director of the state's Agricultural Extension Service. He founded the Pine State Creamery in Raleigh, helped organize and edited The Progressive Farmer, and advocated cooperative action among North Carolina's farmers.
