LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY SERVICES LEADER

Vacancy Announcement

Between the mountains of the Blue Ridge and the shores of the Outer Banks lies North Carolina's Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. The North Carolina State University Libraries has been recognized as the first recipient of the Association of College and Research Libraries? Excellence in Academic Libraries Award for its teamwork, innovation, and continuous interaction with students and faculty to further the educational mission of NC State University. In 2007/08 $126 million was allocated for design and construction of the James B Hunt, Jr. Library, expected to open in 2012/13. This major research library facility will be the social and intellectual nexus for NC State?s Centennial Campus, a research and advanced technology community that includes the colleges of Engineering and Textiles, a variety of science and technology research centers, and more than 130 companies and government agencies.

The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Library Technology Services Leader. The Information Technology Department of the NCSU Libraries consists of five librarians and twelve operations and development staff. The IT service program enables library departments and units to operate effectively through technical consulting, business process modeling, and solutions development. This position offers the opportunity to lead the IT Department's service initiatives and contribute to the evolution of the library's overall technology infrastructure.

Responsibilities

The Library Technology Services Leader provides direction for the library's technology service program, including customer service, technology planning, and resource administration. She or he supervises five IT staff members and manages a program supporting a full range of library IT services including cross-platform desktop hardware and software, network services, multimedia technologies, IT training, and small- to medium-scale application development of library technologies. The incumbent develops and implements customer service agreements with library departments. She or he works closely with the staff of the Learning Commons and the campus Office of Information Technology on development and management of patron computing services throughout the Libraries. Position responsibilities include researching leading edge technologies and service innovations and integrating them into the library environment. The incumbent participates in library planning and serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. NCSU librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Head of Information Technology.

Qualifications

Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in library or information science or related field, plus a minimum 2 years? relevant experience is required. Candidates should possess supervisory experience in a technology- and project-intensive setting and experience in project management. Demonstrated knowledge of current library technologies and of network computing services and desktop applications is expected. Experience with technical solutions development using advanced desktop applications (databases, macro and scripting languages, multimedia applications) is expected, as is experience with technology consulting, training, and customer service in a cross-platform environment. The position requires excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing and the ability to work independently and in a team environment. The ability to set priorities effectively and resolve competing demands in an atmosphere of fast-paced change is essential. Candidates should demonstrate a record of ongoing professional development. Preferred: Experience in administration, development, and support of Mac and Windows environments; design and support of network file, print, directory, and related services; networking protocols and network security; business process modeling tools and languages is preferred. The preferred candidate will have experience with budget administration, purchasing, licensing, and inventory management.

With a staff of 280+ FTE, the Libraries has more than 3.6 million volumes in its collection, acquires more than 56,000 print and electronic serials, and has a total annual budget of over $25 million, with approximately $9 million allocated to collections. The Libraries is the lead server site for NC LIVE (North Carolina Libraries for Virtual Education), a multi-type library initiative, making digital resources accessible to North Carolina residents.

The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, the Coalition for Networked Information, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, the Council for Library and Information Resources, and the Center for Research Libraries. Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University, and North Carolina State University form the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined resources exceeding 13 million volumes and collections budgets totaling more than $29 million.

Salary and Benefits

The Libraries offers highly competitive salaries in recognition of applicable education and experience. Relocation allowance provided.Librarians have non-tenure track faculty status (without levels of rank).
