IT Unit Descriptions

IT General

The NC State University Libraries Information Technology Department contains four units - AV Technologies, Discovery Systems, Enterprise Operations, and Technology Services. Department staff provide leadership in defining technology requirements for library‐wide initiatives and developing infrastructure to support the Libraries’ ambitious technology agenda. Department staff advise on and support the Libraries’ high tech spaces; research emerging technologies; purchase, install, and maintain hardware and software to serve staff and patron computing needs; and oversee A/V design, installation, and maintenance in Libraries spaces.

AV Technologies

The AV Technologies unit supports librarians, faculty, staff, and students in the use of audio-visual technologies for research, teaching, and learning. Unit staff design, implement, and support a wide variety of collaborative, instructional, and advanced AV technology. These spaces include numerous highly utilized group studies, conference rooms, and teaching/presentation spaces across Hill and Hunt Library. It is also responsible for researching, testing, and supporting the high-tech spaces at NC State University Libraries including the Hunt Library’s 3 large video walls, the Teaching & Visualization Lab, The Landing, the iPearl Immersion Theater, and the Hill Library's Cyma Rubin Visualization Gallery.

Enterprise Operations

The Enterprise Operations unit is responsible for the NC State University Libraries’ enterprise computing infrastructure including server room management, systems administration, web hosting, database administration, storage management, virtual desktop infrastructure, and backup services.  It also supports the Libraries’ high performance computing cluster. Enterprise Operations works closely with the Web Team, Digital Library Initiatives, and IT Discovery Systems to design system architectures that enable the Libraries to develop innovative applications and services.

Technology Services

The Technology Services unit is responsible for operational support for all desktops, laptops, peripheral devices, and software in the Libraries. It maintains the managed desktop environment for the Libraries. It manages hardware and software for patron, staff, lending, and instructional computers throughout the libraries. Technology Services supports special use workstations including those for GIS, Virtual Reality, data visualization, and media production. This unit also provides core IT Service Desk support for Libraries staff including technical consulting, troubleshooting and problem resolution, network and telecommunications requests, and A/V support. These services enable NC State University Libraries to provide spaces that increase connectivity, foster remote collaboration, and provide access to specialized hardware and software.
