New this fall:

As part of the budget reductions levied on the university, the NCSU Libraries must take several painful steps to meet its assigned share of these cuts.

To meet its budget cut of over $1.3 million, the Libraries eliminated 27 positions and is preparing to cancel approximately 646 journal titles. To learn more about and provide feedback on the journal cancellations, please visit http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/collections/collectionsreview2014.

Unfortunately, these reductions alone did not allow the Libraries to reach our mandated budget level and we had to include a plan to reduce hours of overnight service at the D. H. Hill and James B. Hunt Jr. libraries beginning in Fall 2014. During spring 2014, students and faculty offered feedback on this plan both informally and in the Libraries' advisory groups. While some students use the Hunt Library more at night and others use Hill, the total numbers in each building late at night are similar. A compromise was reached to keep Hunt open overnight on Sundays and Mondays, and Hill overnight on Tuesdays through Thursdays.

The new hours are as follows:

D. H. Hill Library

Sunday 9:00am - midnight
Monday 7:00am - midnight
Tuesday open 7:00am
Wed-Thurs 24 hours
Friday close 10:00pm
Saturday 9:00am - 10:00pm

James B. Hunt Jr. Library

Sunday open 9:00am
Monday 24 hours
Tuesday close midnight
Wed - Thurs 7:00am - midnight
Friday 7:00am - 10:00pm
Saturday 9:00am - 10:00pm

Wolfline bus service between D. H. Hill and Hunt from 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. is available via the Centennial Night route. During the day, from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., the route that makes the library-to-library connection is the Southeast Loop.

We know how much many students depend on our traditional 24-hour schedule to safely and effectively do their research and study during times that meet their schedules. Through all past budget cuts we have managed to protect 24-hour service. Unfortunately, it is also possible that the university and the Libraries will face further cuts in the future.

We deeply regret that we have had to implement these changes to meet the current budget realities.
