Citation Management Software

Citation management software is a useful tool for organizing citations and research notes, as well as correctly and efficiently documenting and formatting references. There are three citation management tools to choose from, depending on your needs:

  • Citation Builder is great for quick, basic citation formatting - just enter the citation information and then copy and paste the APA formatted reference into your bibliography. Citation Builder is ideal for smaller projects or for those without a need to retain citations over time for multiple projects.
  • RefWorks is a more sophisticated web-based citation management tool that is accessible on or off campus and is available through the Libraries free of charge (there is a campus site-license for this software). RefWorks works with databases and word processing programs, and is a great way to organize, collect and save citations in a personal RefWorks account you create. You can then incorporate the references into documents for easy formatting in APA style. There is a learning curve with RefWorks, however - so it's best for long-term projects (such as theses and dissertations) or for those interested in citation management over time.
  • EndNote is a stand-alone software that must be purchased by users (it's available for sale through NCSU Bookstores). It is very similar to EndNote, just not web-based. EndNote has a lot of the same capabilities of RefWorks and a similar learning curve - so again, it is designed for long-term research.

A general recommendation when choosing between RefWorks and EndNote is to start with RefWorks, since it is free to you and many people prefer the web-based portability offered by RefWorks. If you wish to compare the two, you can download a free 30-day trial of EndNote.

Training is available for both RefWorks and EndNote. Check the workshop schedule through DELTA Instructional Services or contact Katherine Dexter Willis (513-0304) for additional information. Customized small group training sessions are available - contact Katherine to set up a customized training session for a group.
