DDS-38: Digital Representation of a Map Showing the Thickness and Character of Quaternary Sediments in the Glaciated United States East of the Rocky Mountains at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/dds/dds38/. Shows the thickness and character of Quaternary deposits (including both glacial and younger, Holocene sediment) for the glaciated area of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, at 1:1,000,000 scale. Shapefile and SDTS files are downloadable. ArcInfo coverage and export (.e00) files are also available on the CD-ROM. Data layers include: Character of surface sediments, Thickness of Quaternary sediments, Selected thin, surficial sediments, Selected buried sediments, Miscellaneous glacial boundaries, Miscellaneous geologic point features, Major roads, Rivers and streams, Selected cities, and State boundaries. DDS-62: Global GIS Database: Data is not downloadable but information is available at: http://webgis.wr.usgs.gov/globalgis/proj_desc.htm. USGS--"Built from relatively small scale data (1:1 million scale or 1 Km resolution) and put on seven CD-ROM's organized by regions of the world ... Each CD will contain a suite of customized ArcView tools specifically designed for the datasets, making it useful for beginners or advanced GIS users." A list of datasets available with each CD-ROM may be found at: http://webgis.wr.usgs.gov/globalgis/datasets.htm. CD-ROMs will be available for the following regions: Central and South America, DDS-62-A; Africa, DDS-62-B; South Asia, DDS-62-C ; South Pacific, DDS-62-D; North Eurasia, DDS-62-E; North America, DDS-62-F; Europe, DDS-62-G. These CD-ROMs will be available in the DH Hill Library Reference Area, Government Documents Cabinet under call number I 19.121:62. As of 12/4/01 only South America was available, though Africa, South Pacific and South Asia had recently been released.

DDS-68: Coastal Vulnerability to Sea-Level Rise: A Preliminary Database for the U.S. Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf of Mexico Coasts at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/dds/dds68/. Data are available in shapefile and ArcInfo export (.e00) formats along with ArcExplorer and ArcView project files. USGS-"The data are stored in an attribute table associated with a 1:2,000,000 shoreline at 3 minute resolution. Thus, for each 3 minute (~5 km) section of shoreline, there are data for each of the following variables -geomorphology, relative rate of sea-level rise, coastal slope, mean wave height, tidal range and erosion and accretion rates, as well as their ranked values ( 1 - 5 ) and the calculated coastal vulnerability index (CVI)." Files are organized into tiles by Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific coasts and are in geographic coordinates, NAD 83. Metadata is available. CD-ROM Location: Not yet available.

OF 92-129: A U.S. Geological Survey Streamflow Data Set for the United States for the Study of Climate Variations, 1874 - 1988: Available at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/openfile/of92-129/. USGS--"A national data set of streamflow records that are relatively free of confounding anthropogenic influences has been developed for the purpose of studying the variation in surface-water conditions throughout the United States." Station ans streamflow data are available as .dat files. FGDC standard metadata is not available. CD-ROM Location: Not available.

OF 95-0810: Acid Deposition Sensitivity of the Southern Appalachian Assessment Area: Available at: http://minerals.usgs.gov/acid1.html. USGS--"Areas having various susceptibilities to acid deposition from air pollution are designated on a three tier ranking in the region of the Southern Appalachian Assessment (SAA). The assessment is being conducted by Federal agencies that are members of the Southern Appalachian Man and Biosphere (SAMAB) Cooperative. Sensitivities to acid deposition, ranked high, medium, and low are assigned on the basis of bedrock compositions and their associated soils, and their capacities to neutralize acid precipitation." Data are downloadable as ArcInfo export files. Layers available are: Acid deposition sensitivity polygon coverage and map base. An AML for map plotting and a .gra plot are available. OF 96-92: Coal Fields of the Conterminous United States. Available at: http://energy.er.usgs.gov/products/openfile/OF96-92/. USGS--"A digital representation of James Trumbull's "Coal Fields of the United States" (sheet 1, 1960), which is an adaptation of previous maps by Averitt (1942) and Campbell(1908). It is intended to be the first in a series of open file reports that will eventually result in an I-series map that conforms to the U.S. Geological Survey mapping standards. For this edition, coal boundaries were digitized from Trumbull and plotted to represent as closely as possible the original map. In addition, the Gulf Province was updated using generalized boundaries of coal bearing formations digitized from various state geological maps." Data are downloadable in shapefile and ArcInfo export (.e00) formats and are in geographic coordinates (datum not indicated). Scale is 1:5000000. Layers available include: Coking Coal of the Conterminous United States, Coal Fields of the United States, and Coal Fields of Alaska. OF 96-96: Data Base for a National Mineral-Resource Assessment of Undiscovered Deposits of Gold, Silver, Copper, Lead, and Zinc in the Conterminous United States. Not available online. Overview at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/info-handout/assessment/. A scientific study to "estimate the amount of undiscovered gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc that could be present in yet-to-be-discovered mineral deposits 1 kilometer or less below the surface of the ground of the conterminous United States." A 2038 page PDF document documents and provides a means for navigating through the data. OF 97-0289: Digital Compilation of Landslide Overview Map of the Conterminous United States: Available at: http://greenwood.cr.usgs.gov/pub/open-file-reports/ofr-97-0289/. USGS--"... consists of polygons enclosing areas of landslide incidence and susceptibility for the conterminous United States. ... The purpose of this dataset is to give the user a general indication of areas that may be susceptible to landsliding. It is not suitable for local planning or site selection." Data are downloadable in ArcInfo export format. Shadeset, lineset and lookup files are included. Layers available include: landslide polygons, U.S. hydrography derived from Digital Chart of the World, U.S. coastline derived from 1:100,00 USGS Digital Line Graphs, and U.S. counties derived from 1:100,00 USGS Digital line Graphs. An AML provided takes the ARC/INFO export files, converts them to ARC/INFO coverages, projects them into Albers Equal Area, and plots "Digital Compilation of Landslide Overview Map of the Conterminous United States". OF 97-540: Atlas of the GLORIA Sidescan-Sonar Imagery of the Exclusive Economic Zone of the United States: EEZ-View. Some information available online at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/openfile/of97-540/ and at: http://walrus.wr.usgs.gov/gloria/eezcd.html. Contains GLORIA sidescan imagery of the deep-water portions (deeper than 200 meters) of the Exclusive Economic Zone. CD-ROM features include an ArcView project, tutorials, associated images and texts. Data layers available as shapefiles and ArcInfo coverages in Geographic Coordinates include: canyons, quad grid, land area, shoreline buffer, and interpretive geologic map. OF 99-11: Color Shaded Relief Map of the Conterminous United States. Available at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/openfile/of99-011/. The color shaded relief map of the conterminous U.S. was created from 15 arc-second digital elevation model (DEM) data. Data are in Albers Conic Equal-Area projection (meters) and Geographic Coordinates. Data are available in TIFF format at three different resolutions: 300, 400, and 468 meters. Data creation methodology is provided but FGDC standard metadata is not available. CD-ROM Location: Not available.

OF 00-358: USGS East-Coast Sediment Analysis: Procedures, Database, and Georeferenced Displays. Available at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/openfile/of00-358/. A USGS and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution joint program to study the marine geology of the continental margin off the Atlantic coast of the United States. As part of this program and numerous subsequent projects, thousands of sediment samples were collected and analyzed for particle size. USGS--"The purpose of this report is to describe the field methods used to collect marine sediment samples and the laboratory methods used to determine and characterize the grain-size distributions ... the report is divided into three sections: the first discusses procedures, the second contains the data, and the third provides the ability to use desktop geographic mapping tools to visualize the sediment distributions." ArcView project files are provided. Data layers are in shapefile or TIFF format, in Geographic Coordinates, NAD 83. OF 01-136: Lithochronologic Units and Mineral Deposits of the Appalachian Orogen from Maine to Alabama. Not Online as of 12/5/01. USGS--"Designed to illustrate the lithologic nature of the rocks in the Appalachian orogen and to be an underlay for the mineral deposits database for the Appalachians ... The intent of this mineral deposit compilations was to reflect the Appalachian mineral endowment and metallogeny." An ArcView project file is provided on the CD-ROM. Data are available in Geographic Coordinates, datum unknown. Data layers are available in shapefile, ArcInfo export (.e00) and SDTS formats. OF 01-154: Sea-Floor Photography from the Continental Margin Program: A Pictorial Survey of Benthic Character and Habitats Along the U.S. East Coast. Available at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/openfile/of01-154/. USGS--"a geological reconnaissance investigation of the continental shelf and slope off the Atlantic coast of the United States. 464 photographs were collected at 378 stations from the Canadian border to the southern tip of Florida. Bottom photography was conducted at many of these stations in conjunction with sediment sampling for grain size, mineralogy, geochemistry, and biology. The purpose of this report is to release digital versions of these bottom photographs in a gallery that can be visualized geographically." Vector data layers include: photography points, and various land outline datasets. A 2-minute color encoded shaded relief image of seafloor and land elevations is available as a TIFF with .tfw. OF 01-187: Preliminary Lithogeochemical Map Showing Near-Surface Rock Types in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, Virginia and Maryland. Available at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/openfile/of01-187/. USGS--"Preliminary experimental lithogeochemical map shows the distribution of rock types as lithogeochemical units in the Virginia and Maryland parts of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and small flanking areas in western Maryland and eastern Virginia." Data layers are available as ArcInfo export (.e00) files in Geographic Coordinates, NAD 83. Layers include: geologic map units, lithogeochemical map units, carbon-rich soils, sulfide deposits, and INFO tables for relates. Metadata is available. CD-ROM Location: Not yet available.

OF 01-298: Preliminary Digital Geologic Map of the Appalachian Piedmont and Blue Ridge, South Carolina Segment. Available at: http://pubs.usgs.gov/openfile/of01-298/. USGS--"Files from the South Carolina segment of the Appalachian Piedmont and Blue Ridge that are being assembled for the analysis of regional and national geochemical patterns. The geology was compiled by integrating data and interpretations from a variety of sources without additional field work." A 25-km equal-area grid of modern climatic and bioclimatic parameters was constructed from instrumental weather records. The geographic distributions of selected tree and shrub species were digitized, and the presence or absence of each species was determined for each cell on the 25-km grid, thus providing a basis for comparing climatic data and species' distributions. The relations between climate and plant distributions are explored in graphical and tabular form. The results of this effort are primarily intended for use in biogeographic, paleoclimatic, and global-change research." Uses data from Digital Representations of Tree Species Range Maps.
