Data Description

SPOT data

A satellite imagery based black-and-white mosaic of the entire State of North Carolina with a resolution of about 10 m. The data are in Geospot .BIL image format. The projection is State Plane 1983, map units feet.

IMPORTANT! The SPOT Data is licensed for use by NCSU affiliates only.

The full statewide SPOT data set is available online through the Libraries Geodata Server.

Data are organized into directories by 1:250k quadrangle. (see SPOT Data Organization Scheme)

Documentation

Documentation for the Geospot data format is available in the /spotdata/docs directory. Each SPOT data file comes with a .rep file containing information about the image. Also included is an .rsc file (raster source file) which includes information about the original source images.

SPOT Image Dates

SPOT dates

The North Carolina SPOT imagery was captured during the period 1993-1996, predominately around 1995. The .rsc file includes the bounding coordinates and capture dates of the individual images used to compile the final images. Each final image is typically made up of 3-4 source images. As an example, the graphic to the right illustrates the image composition and dates of the Ralei_e1 SPOT image.
