Overview
The Southern Appalachian Assessment GIS Data base (version 3.0) provides over 200 ARC/INFO data layers for an eight state region, including 22 North Carolina Counties. The SAA was a cooperative multiagency effort to assess the ecological condition of the Southern Appalachian region. This database was assembled with primarily publicly available data from Federal and State agencies. Data was converted into a common software format and projection (Albers Equal-Area Conic; see projection information).

Data Listing
The data are grouped by scale (1:24,000, 1:100,000, 1:250,000, 1:2,000,000) or type (coverage, grid, tabular). See the SAA Data Listing for details and file locations.
Projection Information
The Southern Appalachian Assessment GIS Data Base consists of ARC/INFO version 7.x coverages, which are compatible with ArcView 3.x. All coverages are in the same projection, datum,
and coordinate system.
The SAA Albers projection parameters are:
- Albers Equal-Area Conic Projection
- 1st latitude 34 00 00
- 2nd latitude 38 00 00
- central meridian -82 00 00
- latitude of the origin 33 00 00
- false eastings 0
- false northings 0
- The datum is NAD83, employing the World Geodetic System 1984 ellipsiod (WGS84). The units are meters.
Metadata is available on the CD-ROM.
Getting SAA Data
Web
The SAAGIS Database can be downloaded from the SAMAB web site at: http://sunsite.utk.edu/samab/data/SAA_data.html
CDROM
SAA GIS data is available on CD-ROM (a 5 CD set) in the D.H. Hill Library at the reference desk under CD-ROM call number E1.111:SO 8 v. 1-5 CD.
Coweeta Long-Term Ecological Research(LTER)
Coweeta (LTER) site includes a data archive covering the SAMAB area. Much of the data is derived from SAMAB but there is some additional data, though some data is restricted. Users must fill in an online form before downloading, and may need to submit a request in advance.
