Overview
The Ocean Planning Information System (formerly Ocean GIS Southeast) provides access to comprehensive ocean-related data (over 50 layers) and information. This is a prototype, on-line GIS that covers the coastal zones and ocean areas off North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Similar projects for other regions may be developed in the future. Ocean GIS data layer components include: physical resources, living resources, economic resources, hazards, political boundaries, federal jurisdictions, geo-regulations, ocean uses, and marine protected areas. Ocean GIS data is both downloadable and viewable via and interactive mapping application. Metadata as well as information about laws relevant to each layer are provided.
Data Layers and Access
Ocean Planning Information System data is downloadable in ARC/INFO and Shapefile formats from the Ocean Planning Information System web site. Disclaimers and use limitations are indicated on that site. The ARC/INFO versions are made available on the Libraries RPP Netware server for ease of campus access. Consult the data list page for data descriptions, filenames, and metadata. Coverages are organized on the Libraries server in directories by data list category.
